    Description

I'm currently listing a large number of playbills from out-of-town tryouts prior to the Broadway runs. Many are from early performances when revisions were common and include song titles that were cut before opening in New York. (See cut song below.) ....... This is a rare October 8th, 1940 playbill from the Pre-Broadway engagement of the COLE PORTER, HERBERT FIELDS and B. G. DeSYLVA musical comedy "PANAMA HATTIE" at the Shubert Theatre in Boston, Massachusetts. (The production would open October 30th, 1940 at the Forty-Sixth Street Theatre in New York City and run for 501 performances.) ..... The musical starred the legendary ETHEL MERMAN (shown in the cover photo) and featured ARTHUR TREACHER, BETTY HUTTON, JAMES DUNN, PHYLLIS BROOKS, JOAN CARROLL, RAGS RAGLAND, PAT HARRINGTON, AL DOWNING, TED DANIELS, ANN GRAHAM, RONNIE CUNNINGHAM, JUNE ALLYSON, VERA ELLEN, DON WEISMULLER, EPPY PEARSON and FRANK HYERS ..... CREDITS: Book by HERBERT FIELDS and B. G. "Buddy" DeSYLVA; Music and Lyrics by COLE PORTER ("Anything Goes", "Red, Hot and Blue", "Leave It To Me!", "Du Barry Was a Lady", "Panama Hattie", "Something For the Boys", "Mexican Hayride", "Can-Can", "Kiss Me Kate", "Out Of This World", "Silk Stockings"); Choreographed by ROBERT ALTON; Sets and Costumes designed by RAOUL PENE DU BOIS; Directed by EDGAR MacGREGOR; Produced by B. G. DeSYLVA ..... DETAILS: The twelve page playbill measures 5 1/2" X 8 1/2" inches and includes full production credits, cast list, synopsis of scenes, list of musical numbers and wonderful vintage advertising but with the exception of the front cover, no cast photos or bios ..... CUT SONG: The list of musical numbers includes "Americans All Drink Coffee" which was cut out-of-town ..... CONDITION: With the exception of soiling, a lipstick stain and the title written in pencil at the top of the cover and minor edge wear, this playbill is in very good condition and will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any musical theatre aficionado or historian. This item will be carefully packaged in a protective, carded sleeve and backed by stiff cardboard.
