    I'm currently listing a large number of playbills from out-of-town tryouts prior to the Broadway runs. Many are from early performances when revisions were common and include song titles that were cut before opening in New York. (See cut songs below.) ....... This is a rare October 14th, 1937 playbill from the three night, Pre-Broadway tryout of the HOWARD DIETZ and ARTHUR SCHWARTZ musical comedy "BETWEEN THE DEVIL" at the Shubert Theatre in New Haven, Connecticut. (The production would open December 22nd, 1937 at the Imperial Theatre in New York City and close after only 93 performances.) ..... The musical starred British imports EVELYN LAYE, ADELE DIXON and JACK BUCHANAN and featured LEO G. CARROLL (replaced out-of-town by WILLIAM KENDALL), CHARLES WALTERS, VILMA EBSEN, THE DEBONAIRS, ERIC BROTHERSON, DORIS PATSTON, RALPH SUMPTER, JACK LATHROP, WARD TALLMAN and ALBERT AMATO ..... CREDITS: Book, Music and Lyrics by HOWARD DIETZ and ARTHUR SCHWARTZ ("Three's A Crowd", "The Band Wagon", "Sadie Thompson", "Jennie", "The Gay Life"); Choreographed by ROBERT ALTON; Sets designed by ALBERT JOHNSON; Costumes designed by KIVIETTE; Directed by EDWARD CLARKE LILLEY; Produced by the Messrs. DETAILS: The 16 page playbill measures 5 3/4" X 8 7/8" inches and includes full production credits, cast list, synopsis of scenes, list of musical numbers and wonderful vintage advertising, but no cast photos or bios ..... CUT SONGS: The list of musical numbers included "How Do You Do" and "Wand'ring Lover" which were cut in New Haven ..... CONDITION: This rare playbill is in excellent condition and will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any theatre aficionado or historian. This item will be carefully packaged in a protective, carded sleeve and backed by stiff cardboard.
