    Description

This is a rare souvenir program from the West Coast production of the
TOM EYEN camp classic "WOMEN BEHIND BARS" at the Roxy Theatre in Los Angeles, California. (The Original Off-Broadway production opened May 1st, 1975 at the Astor Place Theatre in New York City and closed after 54 performances. This revival opened in April 1983 at the Cast Theatre and later transferred to the Roxy Theatre, running for almost a year.) ..... A camp spoof of the 1950's exploitation films produced by Universal, Warner's and Republic Pictures, the black comedy is set in the Women's House of Detention in Greenwich Village. Among the range of social and psychological types imprisoned within its walls are an innocent young woman (framed by her husband on a charge of armed robbery), who is brutalized, betrayed and sexually assaulted throughout her eight years of incarceration, a chain-smoking, gum-snapping street-wise tough girl, and a delicate Southern belle reminiscent of Tennessee Williams' "Blanche DuBois". Lording over all is the sadistic matron and her tough-as-nails sidekick. The play starred LU LEONARD as the "Matron" and the cast included SALLY KELLERMAN (who replaced ADRIENNE BARBEAU when the show moved to the Roxy Theatre), LINDA BLAIR (who replaced JENNIFER HOLMES when the show moved to the Roxy Theatre), SHARON BARR, MARIE DUVAL, GERTRUDE FLYNN, DEBORAH HARMON, ROSANNE KATON, BRANDIS KEMP, GLENN MORRISSEY and JENNIFER RICHARDS ..... CREDITS: Book by TOM EYEN ("Dreamgirls", "The Dirtiest Show in Town", "Women Behind Bars" and the Off-Off-Broadway productions "Miss Nefertiti Regrets" and "Cinderella Revisited", both starring Bette Midler in 1965); Title Song written by TOM EYEN and sung by MARC ALLEN TRUJILLO; Sets designed by ROSEMARY BRANDENBURG; Directed by RON LINK; Produced by LOU ADLER by arrangement with ROGER BERLIND, FRANKLIN R. LEVY and GREGORY HARRISON
    .....
